Low beam voltage.

After many years of ownership, I’m finally tending to the many areas on my XJ that have been subjected to extreme neglect and apathy. The headlights have always bothered me, so I whipped out the voltmeter today to see just what the issue was.

Kinja'd!!!

High beam voltage.

Essentially, I’m driving around with a dying flashlight taped to my front bumper. The Putco 230004HW harness is on its way.

I need to put mine on a relay. I have added IPF H4 housings & bulbs. But those are brighter than a regular sealed beam.

I ordered some Cebie housings for a VW Rabbit, but neither of those are running.

That’s a pretty huge voltage drop. I’m guessing dirty connections everywhere.

I’m sorry, that mental picture made me laugh more than it should have.

Someone in my local Keep group posted about this company from Indiana. These sell proper LED conversions, housing and all. I’m seriously considering them if I can see them installed on another one.

Jeep or Jaguar?

The Putco/H4 combo on my XJ has been brilliant (pun intended), but keep an eye on those relays, they’re pretty cheap. I ordered a few extras just as backup.

The former.

The connections aren’t too terribly dirty. I’m fairly certain the use of 18 gauge wire in the factory harness isn’t doing it any favors.

Good to know. I’ve got a pile of relays sitting around and toyed with the idea of making my own harness, but for $36 my time is more valuable.

Stay classy, Dodge Stratus!

Yeah, the harness itself I feel is pretty well built, but the relays were craaaaaaap. They buzzed and got hot, one of them eventually giving up all together. Some higher quality ones I sourced from a local electrical supply store work perfectly. SO MUCH LIGHT.

Kinda figured. My friend is an xj freak and the headlights are unbelievably bad.

He actually ordered some really nice ones off Amazon that somewhat modernize them by making them halogen projectors instead.

Aye. My previous XJ was a ‘95 and I was never bothered by the light output. This ‘97 has always been abysmal, though. It’s never really been my DD, so I never put any effort into improving the situation.

I just got my XJ and the headlights are amazing, compared to my other car. I can actually SEE! It’s amazing. Now I just need to hook up the light bar.
